Conference: Challenges of Social Science Research at Western Balkan Universities, Banja Luka, 07.03.2017
The Regional Research Promotion Programme (RRPP) Local Coordination Unit for Bosnia and Herzegovina in cooperation with the University of Banja Luka is organising a conference titled Challenges of Social Science Research at Western Balkan Universities.
Date and Time: 7 March 2017, 9:00-16:30
Venue: Rectorate of the University of Banja Luka, Presentation Hall (Hall 8 – second floor)
Research in Western Balkan countries is characterised by low investment, excessive teaching workloads faced by the faculty, a lack of time for research, and low levels of systemic support for research activities. This results in a low number of research projects, few academic articles published in reputable international journals, and a low profile of researchers and research institutions within the European and international research community.
The recently introduced bills to amend higher education laws at different levels of administration in Bosnia and Herzegovina foresee more stringent criteria for the conferment of academic titles, which would directly impact the perception of the quality of research staff, and, by extension, of research institutions. On the other hand, the amendments push the context in which research work takes place out of the limelight. Specifically, academic staff are overburdened with teaching activities, while remuneration policies of universities often include compensation only for teaching work. At the same time, the research aspect of their posts is still unregulated and left to individual enthusiasm and aspirations.
The goal of the conference is to try to examine the problems and identify potential solutions to bridge the obvious gap at universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the rest of the region between working conditions for researchers on the one hand, and the formal requirements for the conferment of academic titles on the other. The conference will bring together eminent academics and representatives of line ministries and other institutions or organisations operating within the field, in order to exchange experiences and determine possible avenues of addressing the aforementioned problems.
The number of participants is limited, and you are kindly requested to confirm your participation per email: dzenana. hrlovic@analitika. ba (link sends e-mail), or by phone: 033 251 080, no later than 2 March 2017.
